(Translator's note: this is a gargantuan 8-part interview featuring two Japanese AV actors. It's perfect reading material for those wanting to learn more about the adult video industry from the most relatable viewpoint: being an actor. Do you have what it takes?)
Japanese AV stars may be a dime a dozen and debut in numbers that rival the stars in our galaxy. However, why is it that we always see them having sex with the same group of men? Don't you wonder about what those actors have experience? I sure did and had the opportunity to ask some veteran actors about the adult industry.
A cursory search on the internet for a list of Japanese AV actors pulled up about 130 names. Of those, about half are well known and appear often. However, even amongst those only around 10 are easily identifiable to your average adult video.
The arrangement of actors is essentially a pyramid with the largest names on top. However, fans frequently voice an opinion that errs on the side of not wanting to see the same actors all the time. Is there a reason though why their voices are often ignored?
So why is the talent pool for men in AV so limited? Why do we always see the same faces? I went on a successful fact-finding mission to find out.
I had the opportunity to talk plenty with 27 year AV veteran Tsujimaru and 7 year freshman Carlos who know considerably more about the ups….and downs of this splendid industry.
Having one's face blurred is a luxury actresses are not provided.
Men's Cyzo: This isn't my first time interviewing AV actors, but this time is unique in that I called you two here to act as symbols for the male-side of the industry. To begin, please tell us a bit about yourselves.
Tsujimaru: I debuted at the peak of the lewd boom of 1988. Originally, I was on the editorial department of an S&M magazine run by Tokyo Sanseisha. Dan Oniroku was also kind enough to receive one of my manuscripts. Soon enough, I was also working freelance by going onto actual AV sets and reporting on what I saw. One time the actor canceled at the last minute leaving the director in a bind. I guess it was more male curiosity than anything else, but I volunteered my services and the director took me up on it. This is how I entered the industry in front of the camera.
Tsujimaru: Taka-san and I entered the industry around the same time. Chocoball-san arrived a few years later. By word of mouth, my career as a writer waned and I found myself taking on significantly more acting gigs and that's where I remain today. However, since I am getting on in years, the number of gigs I do is much less than my activity from years past.
Carlos: I am a 30 year-old AV actor who is of mixed race. My mother is Colombian and my father is Japanese. My kickoff for starring in AV was seeing an “Actor's Wanted” advertisement in a sports magazine. From there, I went to the website listed and filled in my details. I started small and gradually received more and more work as I became closer with the directors and other staff members. I think my progression up the AV ladder was rather routine.
(Translator's note: Carlos is the only mixed race Japanese AV actor currently in films (as far as we know). His blood gives him a unique look that probably helped a lot in getting work initially. If you're mixed or a full-blooded foreigner, there's still hope for you if becoming an AV actor is your dream! Start learning Japanese though as communication is king.)
