My Dearest Desire: Can you tell us any interesting stories on set?
COLLECTOR: In Perverting the Paranormal Returns (which will be released on ZENRA later this year!), our staff had unfortunate encounters with leeches. The physical well-being of an AV actress is sacred thus to ensure the area was leech-free after one of our staff members discovered one, all the men stripped naked and waded through in order to clear the way for her. Apparently some people saw our group of naked men and alerted the authorities so they had to make a very quick escape.
MDD: Where does Collector get its ideas from? I'm amazed to see something like the poo-gun. Who came up with that?
COL: Our ideas do not come from seeing what our AV competitors put out. Rather, they come from movies, books, and mangas. We also sometimes scout toy shops around our homes to see if there are any unique items that make for good fun on our productions.
MDD: Do you think being bound by mosaic regulation helps or hurts Japanese AV?
COL: The legal need to hide the direct act of copulation has led Japanese AV makers to come up with some very unique fetishes that are found nowhere else. I think with how the system is in place, mosaic will be a constant partner to Japanese adult video indefinitely.
MDD: Can you tell us the process you undergo when planning and shooting a production?
COL: Compared to other production companies, COLLECTOR puts a lot more time and planning into making a title. On average, the process to produce a single title for our label takes at least 2 months. Our titles also require more meetings and more money to see the light of day.
MDD: What are the reactions AV stars have when you approach them with the idea of appearing in an extreme scat or rape title?
COL: Most simply refuse to take part. Thus, a modicum of persuasion is sometimes needed.
MDD: Although Japan may be strict with mosaic, the actual content of AV movies seems relatively unregulated. Scat, rape, lolita, and more seem to be allowed. Do you think it's ironic how censorship is strict, but studios are allowed to produce titles without any theme restrictions?
COL: Back in the Edo Period, there were Shunga, a type of woodblock print that focused on erotic art. Some of the types of eroticism depicted were anything but ordinary such as The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife featuring sexual relations between a woman and an octopus. Because of the diversity of genres depicted in Shunga, many Japanese are open to a smorgasbord of artistic liberties. However, even in Japan there are some people with thick heads who are firmly against certain types of erotic depictions.
MDD: If budget was no concern, what type of production would you like to create?
COL: Something with explosions. Perhaps something from high up in a helicopter. An intense action scene, a car chase down a freeway...many things really. We'd love to do a production similar to Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
