(Translator's note: This post is a continuation of a previous entry.)
WP: So you lost big on travel expenses?
GT: Yup. We had to re-do so many things. I think some of our staff didn't share my spirit. I even had to strongly consider demoting one of our veteran salaried directors (you have no idea how rare it is to be a SALARIED director in Japanese AV) who's been with us for 12 years.
WP: This title was displayed heavily at the 2014 AV OPEN, correct?
GT: Yes and we don't want to take the easy route by simply throwing famous faces on box covers. I kept a watchful eye over this production and did not want to make any mistakes me of the past may have done by interrupted directors mid-production. Nevertheless, re-shoots aplenty!
WP: What a decision!
GT: There was one segment in particular based off a broadcast TV show that I am really proud about (a preview can be found here: http://sodc.co.jp/pages/special/avopen/top.html).
WP: That was a pretty audacious production.
GT: What's more, it's what we at Soft on Demand are famous for! We're the real makers of innovative Japanese AV! I was at the forefront of ensuring we had a steady stream of customers back before my first retirement. Nowadays...well, it's now a lot harder!
WP: I bet. Nowadays, you really need to have cuter girls with less focus on unique productions.
GT: Yea. It goes against my specialty of crafting great production when the focus is just on famous names doing the dirty. I think straight sex with famous faces is taking the easy way out and I want no part in that. No ideas is no good! I am not at all satisfied with our 20th anniversary title. Then again, I don't see myself ever giving any of my own works a perfect score.
WP: How can you reach 100%?
GT: The problem is people involved with a production are not giving it their all. For example, they're half-arsing location-hunting. The same sets are used too much and it's starting to show. Some are even falling apart. People get lazy and the demand for innovation falls to the wayside.
WP: 'Falling apart' is a harsh way to put it.
GT: That's how it is, really. We have to rebuild! We need to return to our more mischievous and ground-breaking past!
(Translator's note: Locations are a big issue and I'm glad this was touched upon. One such pool—which is so common that linking to it isn't even necessary—has been in so many productions that it's essentially become a joke. In fact, the bubble era penthouse it belongs in is one huge overused adult video studio. It sure looks nice, but it would be nice for a change of scenery and hopefully we start seeing a push for more novel locations. Perhaps even a return to hardcore public nudity?)
