OS: Weren't you still a college student around that time? Did you tell your family?
GM: It was only two years after I stopped going to classes that my family received notification from the school of my marathon session of playing hooky. They were not happy. While I was out one day, I received a voice mail from them asking me where I was actually going everyday and I had some explaining to do when I got home. Oh, and this was on Mother's Day.
OS: It seems like you were playing hooky as well on filial piety.
GM: I was on set that day for a shoot. Hiroshi Shimabukuro and I were working together and had a discussion about it during a break. He told me they'd probably worry a lot if I told them the truth about my adult video career so I shouldn't say anything. Most people their age still associate it with STD's, the yakuza, drugs, and loan sharks when this is not the case at all anymore. They also may have thought I'm making good money, but wasting it away by eating out fancy and the like.
OS: Did you eventually tell them? Did they approve?
GM: This was a tough one for me. I really dwelt on it. I doubt they thought I was in AV. Rather, they were almost certainly worried I joined some sort of religious cult. However, if I told them I was an AV actor, I'm sure they would be extremely disappointed.
OS: That's a possibility.
GM: I couldn't tell them I wanted to see boobies and ascend past the mosaic. I listened well to what Shimabukuro-san had to say.
OS: And you finally decided on...?
GM: I didn't exactly follow what he said. More recently, I ended up getting a girlfriend who I became very serious with and marriage was something we were considering.
OS: You, a married man?
GM: Yea, and I also considered going to a clothing vocational school at the age of 29.
OS: Seriously? Clothing?
GM: The very first time I masturbated was to a mail order catalog. One of the pages had this beautiful foreign model in lingerie and you could kind of see her nipples which made me really aroused. This began my fetish of picking various women-oriented fashion magazines.
OS: Fancy fashion magazines, huh? You really jerked off to them?
GM: You bet.
OS: That's horrible! Then again, you are very well-dressed so perhaps you learned a thing or two fashion-wise from those magazines. Anyway, about your girlfriend...how did you meet her?
GM: Funny about that. I originally told her I worked part time as a phone operator for NTT which seemed the natural thing to say at the time. It wasn't until some time later that I braced for backlash as I told her the truth about my AV career. She already knew.
OS: You were caught!
GM: Yea, and I thought I was safe all along. Her parents would not allow us to marry if I continued working in AV.
OS: So you quit...AV?
GM: Of course not. Even my parents now are on board with my career and have some pride that I've been able to do it for so long. It's been almost 10 years now.
The Style of AV Actors is a new book full of stories both fun and heartbreaking. In 216 pages, stories shift from high tension to lowbrow topics and more. If you are a fan of this, please consider picking up a copy.
(Translator's note: Hopefully an English version of this book is released sometime in the future. With the growing demand for Japanese AV abroad, it's only natural that more media about it will be translated so fans all over the world can know the ins and outs of this very prosperous and quite recession-proof industry. Genjin Moribayashi still acts in AV and is featured in many newhalf titles. That initial dialog exchange from the first part of his interview was no jest.)
